Hi, my name is Sarah Vance. I’m 22 years old, and I’m obsessed with One Direction.
When people ask me what type of music I’m into, who my favourite bands/artists are, they never expect One Direction to be one of them. They usually think I’m being sarcastic, just joking around, but no. I’m dead serious. I’ve seen One Direction live four times, although I’ve only paid for my ticket once, and it was $350. This is around the time when people usually shit themselves and think I’m insane. I also tell them I have a life sized Louis Tomlinson poster in my room behind my door. Then people really think I’m insane.
Louis would never break my heart.
So how exactly does a 22 year old girl end up with a life sized Louis Tomlinson poster in her room and spending $350 on a One Direction concert ticket? Well, let me tell you, this did not start out as a full blown obsession. When One Direction first started basically taking over the world, I had no idea who they were. I remember being in my no longer friends car, with another girl bitching about how One Direction were all over her Tumblr feed. I had zero clue who she was talking about, but she kept going on and on about how annoying and stupid this new boy band was. I don’t remember the first time I heard a One Direction song, I assume it was “What Makes You Beautiful”, and obviously I didn’t hate it, or else we wouldn’t be here right now. I’ve always been a sucker for cheesy, kinda lame, but catchy pop songs. I also don’t remember how it came around, but the girl who’s car I was in also thought it was catchy, and together we had our own little guilty pleasure. I remember getting excited with her when their video for “One Thing” came out. I even bought her One Direction stickers for her car. But that friendship ended, and I assumed my little affair with One Direction would soon, but I still secretly listened to their music and bought their live concert dvd to occasionally force people to watch with me as a joke.
Fast forward a few months, I met a girl at work, Carly, who is a few years older than me and loved One Direction as much as I did. Obviously it was a friendship waiting to happen, and we’ve been friends ever since. What made it even better was that while I had my eyes on Louis, she was into Harry, so we never had to fight over who would get the guy, baha! We would always talk about them, share pictures/posts to each others walls, buy each other little One Direction things, and next thing you know you go from having a small, slightly secretive guilty pleasure, to a slow growing obsession. And then a miracle happened: Carly’s boss bought her two One Direction tickets for their upcoming concert that summer, and she invited me to go with her.
So on July 10th, 2013 we went to Toronto and saw our babies live for the first time. We were far in the back, but it was so much fun just singing and dancing and not caring at all how many little kids couldn’t see behind our taller bodies. 😇 They only had two albums at the time, “Up All Night” and “Take Me Home” which honestly I find are definitely their more “pop-ier” albums. My all time favourite One Direction song is “Rock Me” (which I swear to god is about sex, come on, read/listen to the lyrics and replace rock with the word fuck.) so hearing that live made me squeal just a little bit.
Little 20 year old me off to her first One Direction concert!
Where even are they lmao who knows.
After seeing them live, the obsession definitely grew. Next thing you know I was buying everything with their faces on it (I’m literally lying on a One Direction pillow case right now) and I didn’t care who knew it. I was in love, and I had a partner in crime to share it with. When we found out they were coming back the next summer for not one, but TWO concerts, we knew we had to go. They announced one show at first, and we agreed to get the best tickets we could. There were different VIP options for floor seats (sadly you didn’t get to meet them, although apparently the year before if you had VIP you could? Whutevaaaa), normal floor seats, and then different levels of higher up seats. We agreed to try for VIPs but of course when tickets when on sale, they sold out in .2 seconds, so we got in the 100 levels, which isn’t tooooo bad, compared to the people who got stuck with like, 500 levels haha. We were happy and excited. And then those bastards announced a second show. Well fuck, of course we had to go to both. So we had an agreement – only buy tickets to the second show if we could get the same level, or better. Tickets went on sale at 10am, and I remember that day I was working a 10-6 shift. Carly works in an office so she can use her computer to try and get tickets, meanwhile I snuck into the bathroom at work to use the TicketMaster app on my phone. Of course, VIPs were fucking impossible to snag and we weren’t having much luck getting other decent ones, so we gave up. At least we had our tickets to the first show. I got home at 6:30pm that night, and I really don’t know why I had the idea to go onto TicketMaster and try for VIPs. I selected it, and of course nothing came up. I mean, the tickets went on sale 8 and a half hours ago, why/how the hell would there still be VIP tickets available? Yet for some strange reason, I pressed search again.
Ignore the edits covering the price, haha. They were $350.
Boom. Right. In. My. Damn. Face. Two VIP One Direction tickets in the FOURTH FUCKING ROW. Well let me tell you I have never ran down the stairs to get my wallet so god damn fast and I have also never typed all my credit card information in so quickly. My heart was pounding and I was literally shaking. Of course my mom was like, wtf, and when I told her what happened she was still like, wtf. I called Carly and told her the news, we couldn’t believe it. We got the tickets in November 2013, and the show wasn’t until August 2nd, 2014 so we had plenty of time to save up money. We also planned on renting a hotel down in Toronto after the two nights so we could drink and maybe do some One D stalking around the city (which we didn’t end up doing haha).
So August 1st comes, the day of the first show. We go down to Toronto, check into our hotel, get ready, and head down to the Rogers Center. I don’t know why I can’t find any pictures from that show to show you how the seats were, but here’s a nice picture of me and Carly double-fisting.
Featuring our new friend in the middle!
Okay so funny story, every time me and Carly take a selfie at a concert together, there’s always someone in the middle of us who looks like they’re hating their life. Maybe we suck to be sitting behind, who knows.
August fucking 2nd 2014. Oh man. So with the VIP package we got, you got early entry into the venue to a special VIP “party”, a gift bag, a special section where you could buy merch without a crowd…. I think that’s it, haha. We didn’t care for any of that though, we just wanted the close tickets.
Our view of the stage.
Double fisting again, person in between us hating their life again.
Our fancy VIP laminate.
Australian band 5 Seconds Of Summer opened, just like they had the night before, and I believe the year before. Naturally, cute band with cute accents and catchy songs, I developed a love for them as well, and still have it.
Hiiiiiiii Mikey and Luke!
So when One Direction came on stage, me and Carly pretty much pissed our pants. They were RIGHT. THERE. We could see every detail of their perfect little faces (of course cell camera quality is crap and in pictures you can’t really see them.) and it was like they were singing directly to us. Although of course Louis and Harry were, they are our boyfriends after all.
Best shot I got of all the guys!
My little munchkin.
So holy shit, not even going to lie although this probably also will come as no surprise, but that was hands down the most fun concert I’ve ever been to. The energy in the crowd was wild, and you could feel the energy the guys had. I mean you could literally see it in their faces. Except Zayn, honestly, I have two pictures of him from those two nights, he didn’t seem into it, him leaving the group was 0 surprise to me. At one point of the night, Harry threw a water bottle into the crowd and it landed two people next to me, but I mean it was obviously for me and Carly, those bitches just got in the way.
Another funny story, when me and Carly went back to our hotel after that show, we ran into two (I assume drunk) guys in the hallway. They asked what we were up to, and we said we were just getting in from the One Direction concert. So guy #1 goes “WHOAHHH ONE DIRECTION IS IN TOWN!?!?!?!” and we were like “haha yeahhhh!” I can’t remember exactly what guy #2 said, something along the lines of “you girls are probably in your glee right now”, and guy #1 goes “HOLY SHIT!!! YOU GUYS ARE ON GLEE?!?!?!?!?!!” It was pretty funny. He then told us how he lives in the country and doesn’t know anything. They were cool.
So I mean, after being able to snag fourth row for One Direction, we pretty much knew when they announced yet another tour/concert for the next summer, that we weren’t going to be able to get better seats than that. We agreed to try for VIP again, which didn’t happen. But luckily for us Carly’s boss was nice enough to buy her two tickets again (why can’t we all have her boss?) and she invited me to go with her once again. Which was nice, because the last show plus hotel was pretty damn expensive haha. We still had floors, but not as close, but they were also free so can’t complain at all! So on August 21st 2015, we headed to Toronto to see our babies once again, and sadly possibly for the last time ever.
I wasn’t lying about the people in between us!
Swedish duo Icona Pop opened for them (the girls that sing “I don’t care, I love it) and they were AMAZING. They’ve now became one of my favourite groups and I would 10000% see them again if they came around. They are so much fun to watch live. I would definitely recommend checking them out, their music is really fun and catchy with good beats you can dance to. And they’re not all repetitive like “I Love It” is, since I know that song annoys a lot of people now.
Carly and I agreed that we needed their outfits.
Louis kept coming to our side of the stage, looking for me obv.
I’ll be honest, I never got as into their album “Four” as I did their others. I did fall in love with the song “No Control” though, (as did everyone else), so I was hella pumped to hear that live. They had also just dropped “Drag Me Down” earlier that month, and although I wasn’t very into the song at first, hearing it live made me LOVE it. It was extremely fun but also kind of bittersweet, because we knew it was the only song off their new album “In The A.M” that we would be hearing live, as they never went on tour with that album, and have taken a break instead.
Most flattering picture of Louis I have ever taken.
Do I believe One Direction have broken up for good? I like to hope not, but I’m also not going to get my hopes up that there will be another tour in the near future. But if there is, you know damn well I’ll be there. Is my obsession still as big as it has been? No, it’s definitely died down a little bit, but I don’t regret any of my decisions or purchases. I still love all the guys and support them in whatever they decide to do with their lives. The thing is I don’t even think my obsession was even 100% with the band themselves, I think it was like, half the band and half the experiences I had because of them. Being in the fourth row at the Rogers Center at a sold out show is un-fucking-real. The energy is amazing, it’s such a positive place. Always having a concert to look forward to was fun as well because we would spend all year thinking about it, what songs are they going to play, what are they going to wear, what are we going to wear?! Heck, if I had a car I probably would have driven around to see them even more times. I don’t even care how lame this sounds, but I want a 1D tattoo one day. Not just for them, but for the experiences I’ll never forget.
Also Louis, if you ever somehow see this, marry me. Okay thanks.
